Summer, Summer, Summer Time

Summer began about two weeks ago for some folks but it wasn't until July 9th that my youngest child celebrated his last day of school and I honestly don't know which one of us is happier! Seriously, it's been a overwhelming school year. Sleeping through my alarm clock nearly every morning, battling the worst winter weather the Midwest has experienced in over thirty years, scrambling to get my son to school on time every day, and nearly exhausting my flextime allowances on my job! On top of all of this, I've been fervently working to complete my second novel by the onset of fall. That shall come to pass!

While working towards that goal, I still plan to have a fantastic summer! Spending quality time with my family and friends--bike riding, badminton, golfing (trying to, at least), sitting by the poolside, visiting water parks/amusement parks, and of course, READING & WRITING! What fun would summer be without those two???

Enjoy your summer and stay tuned for that book release notification :)

Til next time,

LA

Happy Mother's Day

Mother's Day weekend was far too busy to get any writing done. Saturday was a whirlwind of activities: sorority meeting, shopping for myself and my mom--I bought my mom a Belgian waffle maker and added two more charms to my Pandora bracelet I got for an early Mother's Day present--took my son to his friend's birthday party, and then attended my cousin's college graduation party.

Sunday was early service at church with a couple of extra children (my niece & 2 nephews, along with my son).

Lunch at Red Lobster  with mom and family:

Me, my sister, my niecey pooh, and
    My mom.

    Me and my two children

My son and my two nephews

Lastly there was grocery shopping! Yep. Mother's don't stop being mothers just because it's Mother's Day. Like I tell my children often, life goes on after this holiday--I'm usually speaking of expectation of excessive spending for the Christmas holiday-- but the message is just as applicable for this holiday.

All the running around I did between those two days wore me out. I actually had to take a nap on Sunday just so that I could watch the season finale of Revenge.

     Sleeping Beauty 😄

Nevertheless, writing was not far from my mind. At the close of my writing session on Friday, the romantic words I had been looking for on a scene I was working on finally appeared in my head. I held on to them all weekend until Monday morning until I could get back to my document.  Let me tell you, opening that document was like watching the sun breakthrough a sea of dark clouds--refreshing.

Now that I've honored my mom and been honored as a mom, it's time to get back to business...

LA and the Spring Literary Cafe

What better way to kick off the long awaited for spring season with a literary cafe!

It'd been awhile since I had a speaking engagement but it was good practice for the promotions I'll be doing for the new novel slated for release this fall. Now I'm even more anxious about all that I have lined up for Reconciliation to Hell.

Stay tuned...

Author L.A. March MWN Highlights

Buzz. Buzz. Buzz. With my iPhone nestled under my neck, there was no ignoring the buzz of the alarm. But even without the alarm, I was wide awake from the three little boys, ages 5 to 9 and a 3 yr old girl who were up at 7 AM. Everybody had somewhere to be that morning, including me. It was the 2nd Saturday of the month which meant my writers group was having its monthly meeting. What was the topic for the month? I had no idea, but I knew that I needed to be there.

"Ma, you know you're going to that meeting." My naysaying visiting college aged daughter challenged me. I totally understood why she doubted me. For the last six years that I've been a member, she's heard me say on the Friday before the meeting that I was going. Then when the day would come, I'd use any excuse not to go. So I can't blame her.

I don't know how the switch finally flipped in my head but now that I've gotten into the groove of going to the meetings, I can't imagine my 2nd Saturdays without them!

Here are a few of the highlights from this month's meeting:

1. Met a new author who's written and published a historical fiction based right here in the city of Detroit. The bulk of her time spent on the novel was on ...you guessed it, research!

2. Giving away your book fror free counts as a sale! According to Motown Writers Network founder, Sylvia Hubbard, when a reader buys your book for the promotional price of $0.00, it still counts in your sales numbers! So go ahead, have a promotion and boost your sales numbers too!

3. Want book reviews? Register as an author on www.netgalley.com and indicate that book is available for review.

New Excerpt from My Upcoming Novel

New Excerpt from upcoming novel #RCH

“Wow, Lydia,” Sandra said in disbelief. “I expected much more of a reaction from you than this.” Sandra and Lydia were sitting crossed legged on the soft beige carpet of her family room enjoying barbecue chicken pizza, salad, and apple martinis.

Lester had finally left after another an hour or so of cuddle time but not in time to miss Lydia’s arrival. The two of them nearly collided at the door.

“Ugh.” Lydia groaned. “Why are you here?” Lydia asked seething. She and Lester were never quite fond of one another, but throughout he and Sandra’s marriage Lydia did make a concerted effort to be cordial of respect for Sandra. Since the separation and then the divorce proceedings Lydia had taken the kiddy gloves off.

“Because this is my house.” Lester was quick to answer.

     “Hmph. Not much longer.”

Oh Lawd, Sandra thought to herself. Right about now she was wishing that her girls were at home. At least then, Lester and Lydia would have exerted some effort to behave civilly towards one another. She had followed Lester to the door to kiss him goodbye when he opened the door to find Lydia standing on the other side.  She wanted so badly to open her mouth and put a stop to the exchange. Instead she’d just stood there. The corners of Lester’s mouth turned from an angry frown into a cunning grin.

“Okay. Obviously you and Sandra need to talk.” He turned back Sandra and kissed her on the lips before brushing past Lydia. Was that for my benefit or hers? Sandra wondered.

Sandra hadn’t fully turned away from closing the door before Lydia lit into her.

“And what the hell did he mean by that?”  But Lydia was a smart woman. She didn’t need it spelled out but she wanted to hear Sandra say the words.

Sandra did. “Lester and I getting back together.”

Lydia took no time at all to absorb the news. As though it was no surprise at all. No objections. No questioning Sandra’s decision. Lydia only nodded her head and then said, “Let’s order some pizza.”

Either Lydia had really expected this outcome or she had enough to contend with in her own marriage. Lydia and Roy—Sandra’s cousin, had been married a little over eighteen months. It was a miracle that they’d made it down the aisle after Lydia almost ruined their relationship backpedaling with an old frame. And now that they had, Roy was putting the pressure on Lydia to have a baby while she wanted to focus on getting her career back on track.

“Can’t I enjoy being a wife for a little while before I become of mother?” Lydia’s complaints fell upon deaf ears. Lydia was the sole member of her team. Everybody else was in favor of a baby. Team Roy!

“Well it’s not a whole lot for me to say.” Lydia went on to say. “You know that I understand more than anybody about the need to make decisions without the input or advice of your friends. I just hope you know what you’re getting yourself into. Life is going to be a little different with Felicia and L.J. in the picture. Are you prepared for that? ” Lydia asked.

This process of working things out with Lester hadn’t involved a lot of conversation about Felicia. L.J., yes, but not Felicia. Lester definitely had his shortcomings as a husband but he excelled as a father. And he had no intentions of being any less of a father to L.J.

Sandra couldn’t do anything but respect that. So she and Lester made an agreement. Sandra wouldn’t interfere with his relationship with his son as long as he was honest with her about anything that happened between him and Felicia while they were separated. She didn’t want any more surprises.

Lester contemplated for a few minutes before he fessed up. “Yes, Sandra. I slept with her a couple of times after you kicked me out. But I knew nothing good would come of that so I cut it off and made it clear to Felicia that our only relationship would be as parents to L.J.”

Honesty was best. If Lester had said anything but that Sandra would have called him a liar to his face! Sandra knew that Felicia would have gladly slid into the role of Mrs. Lester Anderson if Sandra had given her the opportunity. What woman wouldn’t? To be married to an attractive, wealthy and successful man like Lester Anderson was what most women wished for. They could deny it all they wanted but Sandra knew most women would have did just as she’d done, turning a blind eye to Lester’s infidelity. The perks that came along with him were a small price to pay. She lived in a grand home in an upscale community. Her children could attend the best private schools. And she had the notoriety of the Anderson name.

Men have been cheating on their wives since the beginning of time. And their women have been forgiving them for just as long. Sandra figured it was far better to deal with a financially successful cheater than a broke one so she might as well stay put.

Even with her Ivy League education and corporate law position, Felicia would have done the same.  Obviously so, if she tried to seduce Lester. But it didn’t work. Sandra and her family were                            intact and Felicia would have to keep sitting on the sidelines.

“Of course, it’ll be different having a child around my house who isn’t mine but I’m sure I can handle a dose of L.J. and Felicia every other week.” Sandra finally said taking a small bite of pizza into her mouth.

“I’m glad you’ve got that all figured out. I just wish you hadn’t let me embarrass myself in front of Lester like that.” Lydia said speaking to her and Lester’s clashing at the front door. “Thanks to you he got quite a laugh at my expense. Now, that, I have a problem with.”  The friends of twenty years laughed at that and then settled into the throwback movie they were watching on DVD.
Any other time Sandra wouldn’t have been able to sit through any Ben Stiller movie, let alone her favorite one, Meet the Parents. Aside from laughing at the comedic antics of Ben, watching Lydia convulse in uncontrollable laughter on her favorite parts would send Sandra into the same spell. But not this time.

Tonight her mind was wondering in and out about Lester’s claim to being a changed man. That he really hadn’t grasped the severity of his behavior until he held those divorce papers in his hand. Realizing that Sandra would actually leave him, break up their family had shown him the error of his ways. He promised to never cheat on her again.

Was he the changed man that he claimed to be? Or was he playing the ultimate game of deceit? Was she a fool to believe him? After all, he’d told her the same thing a thousand times before? How many times had he begged her forgiveness, promising to never do it again, while adorning her with her favorite luxuries? She lost count a long time ago. Had filing for divorce finally garnered her the results she desired? It sure better had, she thought, because as soon as she spilled the beans about this reconciliation, she was relinquishing all future complaining rights, as well she should.

Holiday Reading Fun with L.A.

Christmas time already?

Absolutely!
Besides the season of gift giving, for me, it's also a time for holiday themed reading. My little tradition of sorts began on a trip to visit my boyfriend in Chicago about 5 years ago. This was by far not my first time in Chicago, but it was by far my most memorable Chicago trip--perhaps 'cause I was all happy and in love.

Anyway, knowing my love of books, stopping at the mega bookstore on Michigan Avenue was a must! Being all happy and in love, I promised not to take too long. Believe me, that was challenging!

Like any time I visit a bookstore, I wasn't looking for anything in particular--certainly not a Christmas book! Who does that?

Me. My eyes fell upon a shiny covered, festively adorned Mary Higgins Clark book and I knew I had to have it.

A Christmas mystery by the worlds most beloved mystery and suspense author!

I was sold immediately. And ever since at this time I my reading eyes crave CHRISTMAS!

I invite you to have some holiday reading fun with me! From now until Christmas  I'm going to post a holiday themed book for your consideration.

And it's okay if you don't finish it by Christmas Day. You won't get in trouble, I promise.😉

March Writing Challenge

I swear I'm experiencing dejavu! Seems like I just had one these writing challenges of mine. But I'm going to keep on keeping on until I GET IT DONE!

If I keep up with the determination and discipline of the past couple of days, I will! Practice makes perfect and education is power!

I learned a few things since the last challenge. First, it's not enough to write everday. You have to write everyday with PURPOSE! While blogging is fun and fantastic--at least I think so--if that's not the purposed project then that writing doesn't count--unless, of course, your goal is blogging.

Because I'm writing a novel and I blog regularly, I need to develop a schedule AND actually adhere to it. With the way that blog ideas appear so randomly in my head, therein lies the challenge!

Anyway, in the spirit of National Book Reading Month, I'm doing a couple of key things:

1. Increasing my daily word count goal from 250 to 1000!
2. Finish first draft of novel by 3/31!

If I meet the 1000 word challenge, I'll be done with the draft! Wish me luck!

Are You a "Wanna Be" Fiction Writer?

If I hadn't already been a place of acknowledging that I don't spend nearly the amount of time writing as I do thinking about writing, this article surely would have hurt my feelings. Instead, it lit a fire under me! That same evening I scheduled an hour of writing time and stuck to it! If you are can't handle constructive criticism about yourself then you might not want to read this. However, if you're ready to make a change in your writing life then check this out and click on the links to the previous posts if applicable for your writing life!

The Shoebox & the Essence of Motown Literary Jam & Writer Conference

Who knew that a shoe box would have anything to do with a writer's conference?

At the Essence of Motown Literary Jam & Writers Conference this past weekend I started learning stuff before the workshops even began. I was sharing a vendor table with fellow author Tenita Johnson and the fact that she was still working on her setup when I was finished in under 5 minutes was the first sign that I was about to be schooled. On her side of the table was a lollipop-filled mug, strips of words of encouragement, colorful magnets highlighting her book's message, along with the standard business card and promotional items. Sure, those things were awesome in and of themselves but when she slid a shoebox under the tablecloth, elevating her book above everyone else's--hot damn! I marveled at the ingenious!

Notice the extra decor on the other side of the table.
Lucky for me the trunk of my car is like traveling storage container and there was a box--not a shoe box but a box nonetheless-- inside that I can use for the occasion. Worked like a charm. Don't get me wrong. I didn't sell any books, but that's not why writers attend writer conferences. We go to learn how to sell and write books better.

And learn I did!

This post would be endless if I tried to list everything I learned at the conference. Instead I'll direct you to my Twitter account. Look for tweets with hashtag #eom2012, #mwn.

Til my next post. Happy reading!

Sincerely,
L.A.

Nanowrimo Pause--Get your Vote on!

Yay! It's the sixth day of Nanowrimo--National Writing Month--and as usual I'm off to a very slow start. But today, more important than nanowrimo, it's election day! I'll give my day job its due and then I'm off to the polls.

I won't get off into who my choice candidate is but no matter the wait, no matter the length of the ballot, no matter how long it takes I'm going to make sure my vote counts. And I encourage you to do the same.

Voting is not only a right that was fought and bled over, it is our responsibility. It is our time to have a say in government. Personally, I'm excited about that!

Now back to nanowrimo!

Celebrating National Author Day

What does an author do on National Author's Day? Celebrate themselves? Celebrate the authors who inspired them? Celebrate local authors by giving them a shout out? Write?

I'm happy to say I did a little of all that. Gave Melissa Love, author of Holy Suspicion, a shout on Twitter for being Motown Writers Network National Author's Day spotlight author. I'm reading one of my favorite authors, Mary Higgins Clark. And I made a little bit--literally--of progress on my current work in progress.

While all of this was gratifying, nothing tops culminating my evening with one of my all time favorite authors, Terry McMillan! Ain't God good? I saw the advertisement early on but I neglected to buy a ticket. Why? Because that's the kind of thing I do. Wait until the last minute. Sad, I know. So the day comes and I honestly wasn't thinking anything about it until, that is, I hit up Twitter. Gotta love Twitter. First, I learned that it was National Author Day. Then I was reminded that Terry was coming today! I shouted out that I wanted to go and my writing buddy shot me the link for tickets. $35! I love Terry but I couldn't fork over the $35 to see her as I consider everything on my financial to-do list. So I dropped it.

Then lo and behold my writing mentor Sylvia Hubbard texts me that she's got a ticket for me! She is so awesome!

The way I see it, God set this all up. I've been stressed the last couple of weeks. Need to get my writing mojo back.

An evening with Terry McMillan and my Motown Writers Network buddies was an easy fix!

Me and Sylvia!

Terry has taken the stage!
Writing buds Kai Kaiology Mann & Phette Ogburn
"Living the Sweet Life" was the name of the event and creating your own happiness was the theme. I already choose happiness so, for me, this event was all about being in the presence of literary greatness. Terry McMillan is such an inspiration. I definitely got my writing mojo back!

Happy National Author Day!

LA Writing Challenge Has Come to an End

Of course, I'm late updating my blog about the challenge but it's officially over as of this past Monday, October 1. None of those involved completed their project. However, everyone reported having made significant progress that they were proud of. I know I did!

Without the challenge I would have remained content with my puny--yet comfortable-- 250 word daily goal. During the challenge, on my best days I typed over double that number.

On days when I struggled with a scene, I forcibly pushed on to the next one--even when I wasn't sure if it would be cemented into the story. But isn't that the purpose of the draft??? Get the writer going in the right direction.

Today I'm more than on my way to completing this manuscript. The end is so close I can reach out and touch it!

Thanks to my writing buds who cheered me along the way as I did the same for them. Til next time.

30 Day Challenge Update #3

Despite days of weariness, discouragement, and plain 'ole stubbornness, Im proud to say that I'm writing EVERYDAY! Even making some good progress. I wish I could have done better this weekend but I did the best I could considering I had family over.

Now Monday has rolled back around and its these five days that I expect to get the most accomplished. One trick up my sleeve is to NOT spend so
much time on any particular scene. If it doesn't work at that moment I'm simply going to move on to what i want to happen next.

I didn't make a lot of progress but tomorrow I'm going to finish this one scene I've been working on so I can move this story along to the finish line.

Wish me luck. How's your writing coming along? Share in the comments below.

30 Day Challenge--Day 2

My personal 30 day challenge to finish my book presented a perfect way to connect with my twitter buddies I invited them along and to far the response has been good.

As for myself, I immediately felt the weight of accountability on my shoulders. You know, once you tell folks what you're going to do, you gotta kind of put up or shut up.

In true L.A. form, last night I was on the "shut up" side, snoozing instead of writing that other 500 words I was shooting for. Is that called self sabotage?

All in all yesterday was still a good writing day. I wrote double my 250 daily word count goal. If not for this 30 day challenge, that'd be awesome but the challenge is on and poppin! 250-500 words a day just isn't going to get it. I need to crank it up to like 1000.
It'll be a challenge but that's the point, right?

30 Day Writing Challenge

Upon close inspection of the word count log I've been keeping for the book I'm writing, I've been on a roll since the beginning of this month. Actually days before that but I'm gonna focus on the month at hand.

I'm borrowing a blog challenge that a fellow blogger, Skinny Black Girl, did last month. She challenged herself to blog everyday for 30 days. I decided to tweak her challenge to meet my needs, which is to finish this book!

I've lost count of how many fellow authors have shared stories of buckling down over a matter of weeks to finish their novels or books. I can do this! Yes I can! (Can you tell I'm watching the Democratic Convention? Lol)

Join me. Personalize this challenge to your needs. What do you need to finish? An essay, short story, editing project, blog design? Let's do it together.

Share your challenge below.

Book Pause--Literary Lesson

When I was writing my first book, Unfinished Business, I avoided reading fiction novels. For starters, I didn't want to unconsciously infuse the other book's storyline into my storyline or borrow scenes, and such. Is that form of plagiarism? Probably not, but I try to be remain ethical in everything that I do. Don't want to jinx my success, you know. Secondly, since I struggled seriously with finding time to write, I'd be plaques BIG time with guilt for reading a book when I needed to be finishing writing one!

However, as I'm working on my second novel--a spinoff of the first, I've changed my position on this matter. As a writer it's important to read a lot. Right! I'm sure we all agree on that. Just the same, as writers, we need to write a lot! Duh, right?

There's only one way to accomplish this, I've finally realized. Do them simultaneously. When I tried this recently, I benefited significantly from
reading the great writing of one of my favorite authors, Sandra Brown. First off, the story, French Silk, was awesome, one of the best suspense stories I've read in awhile. The story was set in New Orleans. By the time I finished the story, I felt like I'd visited the culturally rich city. that I expected anything less from Sandra Brown.

Anyway, back to the story. Reading Sandra Brown's vividly described scenes, realistic characters, and her showing of the story rather than telling were both exciting and inspirational. My excitement as a reader is obvious. As a writer, I was excited because I was reminded of what my own writing needed. After I finished the book, I wanted to describe the kind of jewelry my protagonist wears, what hair accessories she likes, what brand of weave she likes. I'm excited about showing how her disgust for the way her mothers loose ways during her upbringing plays into her eventual resolution to her own loose ways.

See the double benefit? How do you balance your writing and reading life? Do you only when you're not writing? Or do you do a little of both like I did?

When to Move On--A Literary Lesson

The numbers recorded on my word log for my upcoming novel over the last few weeks have been pretty dismal: 85, 288, 27, 280, 91, 41, 21--to give a few examples. And these don't even reflect the days when I didn't write anything!

As if that's not enough to be down in the dumps about, do I dare share with my literary friends that this minuscule effort has been on one friggin' scene!

I know. I know. Stop yelling at me! In my five plus years as an author I know better than to have spent this considerable amount of time on the same scene. I should have moved on days ago against the pull of the literary devil to stay lost in a scene that obviously wasn't working or isn't meant to be--at least not right now.

Make sure you don't fall into this form of writers block by, first, planning your scene thoroughly before you begin writing, and, second, don't be afraid to leave a scene unfinished. Perfect time to use the bookmark feature of Microsoft Word. When you're ready you don't even have to search for the page where the scene is housed--just search your bookmark and click. Its also convenient if you decide to delete the scene all together.

Finally, at the start of this week, I've moved on to something else and the writing has been going well, although that unfinished scene is not far from my mind. Lol.

How do you handle these types of moments in your writing? Do you fight with the scene like I was doing until you get it right? Or do you ditch it immediately?

Respond below.

Another One Bites the Dust

Oops I did it again..." Unfortunately, not whatever Britanny Spears was talking about in her smash hit in the late 90's. Rather, it seems, I've made another petty thief happy in the city. It was a Friday afternoon. If not for my apartment needing extermination, I would have been at work. Anyway when the time came for me and the kids to leave the apartment for a few hours I decided to take them to the carnival on our city's Riverwalk. Not only did we need something to do, but my sister had informed that the event was free until later that evening so I figured this was an opportune time to support the city. Humph.

If only I hadn't already taken my laptop with me to breakfast and the park near my home, it would have been safely at home. Instead, as I'm always trying to find opportunity to write, I'd brought it with me.

So we arrive at the event, park on the street in a pretty decent area-SO I THOUGHT!

It would seem some punks in the city picked the street I parked on to randomly check for unlocked cars to see what they'd luck up on. That day it would be my laptop!

Pure luck for them. Not so much for me. I may have been dumb enough to leave my friggin' doors unlocked but not dumb enough to leave my laptop out in the open. It was tucked under the seat, no cords exposed. But those bums rifled through every place but the trunk of my car.

And yes, I did say this is the second time this had happened--the first time my mom was using my car & my laptop was inside when she left the doors unlocked to run into the corner store. That time was worse because my tote bag WITH my laptop AND flashdrive inside was taken. Everything was lost. Literally. I practically had to start my novel over, which I could use as an excuse for why I'm behind schedule with publication.

Nevertheless, I was able to look on the bright side of things-my car was not damaged in any way nor were me or my children.

Surprisingly I haven't run out to replace my laptop. While lack of available funds play a significant role in that fact, I also have to admit that I don't really make that much progress with my writing on the laptop anyway. Most of my writing happens on my desktop at my day job--on breaks & lunch, of course. I just like the laptop for for occasions of trips to the coffee shop, library, or vacations.

It's safe to say that whenever I do get another laptop, it will always be kept on my person when I take it out of the house. Enough is enough!

When you take your laptops out and about with you, how do you protect it?

Writing Distractions: Making Them Work for You!

> I was off to a great start this morning. Had an awesome night with my honey. Was up and attem' this morning, looking forward to the day ahead. Of course that included hitting my writing objective of 250 words in my current novel in progress.
>
> My butt hadn't even gotten settled in my chair, let alone my coffee cooled down enough for me to drink before my daughter called.
>
> "Mom!" She whined. "I'm tired of people around eating other peoples stuff!" she said referencing her stepdad and stepsister who have just as much rudeness in common as they do DNA.
>
> I diffused that fire only to have my honey call me complaining about something my son did to his daughter. A heated argument ensued which led to nowhere but an unproductive writing day.
>
> Almost.
>
> After wasting quite a few hours stewing over anger, being totally lost on the novel I was supposed to be writing, it finally dawned on me to let the subject of my anger fuel something productive rather than unproductive.
>
> An article/essay idea was born! I took a deep breath, brought up a blank document and began typing the intro on the subject matter of blended families.
>
> Of course I don't know when I'll finish the article/essay--I'm still working on a description essay about my first cruise vacation that I started a month ago. Still it was better to have started something productive, something that could produce income in the future rather than stressing over life's challenges.
>
> Next time life gets in the way of your creative flow, I encourage you to try writing about it simply for the sake of continuing the craft of WRITING!
